Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral, often called the Major was built in neo-Byzantine style between 1852 and 1893. Located in the district of Joliette, she stands on a plaza between the Old Port and harbor of the joliette. The district of Joliette is the center of Euro-Mediterranean project to create a business center. It is part of the Panier, historic settlement site of the Greek colony of Massalia in 600 BC. It is customary to designate it as a 'popular neighborhood’: the Panier is traditionally the first location of immigrants in Marseille.
